Restoration Project

Our Chapter is restoring West Pittsburg Station

The Beaver Valley Junction Chapter is now known as BLRHS.org is the new owner of the former P&LE station at West Pittsburg, PA (just south of CSX's New Castle yard).

The chapter has plans to restore the station and reopen it as a railroad museum. The station was built in 1907, and saw its last passenger train in 1964. The building has been vacant and unused for decades; vandals and the ravages of time and the elements have taken their toll, although much of the original woodwork and tile floors remain largely intact. A lot of money and even more hard work will be required to restore it. However, when we reach our goal and the station reopens as a museum, it will serve as a valuable resource for preserving the railroad history of Western Pennsylvania.

Sundays frequently see cleanup and other work taking place at the station, and other events at the station will be announced on the front page of this website. Volunteers and donations (in the form of money, time, or expertise) are always welcome and greatly appreciated.

History

In 1907 an arts and crafts style railroad station was designed and built to service the traveling public. Its solid stone exterior and red sloping roof with two dormers and extended overhang allowed the public a place to wait outside with protection from the snow, rain or sun. It was well suited for the public inside as well and a comforting place to wait for the train. Years passed and one day the trains came no more leaving this wonderful old building deserted and in disrepair. The roof started to leak and the once welcoming overhang became a dangerous place to stand as supported beams rotted and decayed. This sad situation was well noted by the members of the Beaver Valley Junction Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Years passed and the Chapter successfully restored the Union Tower by 2005, but how to begin this daunting task of restoration for this fine old station with just volunteers and hardly any funds? Help came in many ways so we are listing the articles and progress here for you to read about and hopefully join in with your donations and your time. Please read our NEWS for restoration events. If you want to preserve history like we do, please come by and find out how much FUN we have working together and what a joy it is to see the results!
